Will Electricity Drive Our Transportation Future?

With the minor exception of some electrified rail applications,almost all people and freight are transported by engines using refined petroleum products.This is about to change.Driven by higher prices for petroleum,concerns over air quality and climate change,and the desire for energy independence,new technologies and fuels are emerging to satisfy these policy goals.However,not all technologies are equal in meeting these and other diverse policy goals.As a result,we will see intense political and economic competition regarding which technologies succeed and which fail.The outcome is very much in doubt.
