FutureGen Major Federal Effort to Generate Cheap Electricity Without CO2

Currently,there are just two coal-based integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) plants in the United States (Exhibit 1) and six in the world.Both U.S.plants were commissioned by the U.S.Department of Energy (DOE) through its National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).One plant is the top-dispatch unit in Tampa Electric's generating system and has been operating commercially for over 10 years.With operational plants having designs that are,in most cases,over 10 years old,it is time to build upon our lessons learned and to bring on the next generation of clean coal technologies.
