Since 1999, natural gas prices have trended upward as continuing natural gas demand pressure, much stemming from expanded capacity for electric power generation, has left the industry operating near full capacity. Tight demand-and-supply balance has made the natural gas market susceptible to significant price swings when unexpected changes occur in the market, such as weather-related spikes in demand or supply constraints caused by hurricane damage.
