Since the late 1990s,I have jokingly told acquaintances that I have known the great crooks of our age,Bernie Ebbers and Ken Lay,fairly well.Unfortunately for me,my personal contact with Ebbers,working directly with him in the early 1970s for three years before he left the garment factory (which it was not-it was the headquarters of a major division of a Fortune 500 company,Kellwood Corp.,which was the second-largest employer in the state of Mississippi at the time) to go into the motel business,was much greater than my contact with Lay.
