Ordered growth of a ZnO nanorod array on a pre-patterned ZnO seed layer was successfully obtained. This patterned array of ZnO nanorods was introduced to the front panel of a plasma display panel (PDP), forming a hybrid PDP. The discharge voltages of a hybrid panel versus a conventional one were measured, showing significantly lower firing and sustaining discharge voltages. The reduction of discharge voltage was attributed to an enhanced effective secondary electron emission yield (gamma_(eff)) by the presence of ZnO nanorods. The gamma_(eff) of a hybrid panel was found to be higher due to the field-assisted electron emission under a PDP electrical field. The luminance and luminance efficiency of a hybrid PDP were also characterized and compared with those of a conventional panel.
