The changes in the structure and physicochemical characteristics of clinoptilolite tuff activated with 4.0 M hydrochloric acid were studied in this work. Using low-temperature adsorption/desorption of nitrogen the specific surface and porosity of clinoptilolite tuff were determined before and after activation with 4.0 M HCl. Acid treatment is found to cause an increase in the specific surface area, as well as the primary and secondary porosity of the sorbent. Selective adsorption of toluene from a mixture with water and thermogravimetric analysis indicates an increase in the hydrophobicity of acid-activated clinoptilolite tuff.
