Is La Jolla a city, a town, or, as some residents call it, a village? Ask three different people, and you'll get three different answers. But whatever you call it, La Jolla - which some say was named after a Native American word for cave, "woholle," and others, after the Spanish word for jewel, "la joya" - is a beautiful place to visit just outside (or is that inside?) San Diego. Despite its 42,000 residents, La Jolla has a resortlike atmosphere. Since the 1880s, it has been a popular vacation destination, abounding in ocean bluffs, caves, and beaches, including Windandsea Beach and La Jolla Cove. The seaside setting is ideal for those who like to swim, skimboard, surf, snorkel, and scuba dive.
