WITH ONLY A FEW EXCEPTIONS,THE MAJOR OIL COMPANIES posted increased profits in their corporate and downstream earnings for the third quarter of 2004 and the nine months ended Sept.30.ExxonMobil Corporation reported this quarter's corporate earnings,not including a special charge of us550 million for the Allapattah lawsuit provision,of us6,230 million as the highest quarter ever.And despite this special charge,ExxonMobil still managed to lead big oil corporate earnings at us5,680 million.ExxonMobil faired well downstream too,but Shell recorded higher earnings and percentage increases.
