JAPAN'S ALUMINUM DEMAND TRENDS IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2003 (January to March)

According to data from the Japan Aluminium Association, total aluminum demand during the January-March first quarter of 2003 increased 8.4 percent from the corresponding period a year ago to 1,011,848 tons. The volume regained the level recorded in the same period of 2001. On the demand side by market, shipments, except for those made to the food industry and electric power sector, rose across the board from a year ago. Notable steady growth was seen in transportation with a 12.1 percent increase, electric equipment 12.8 percent and machinery 23.7 percent. Exports were brisk and shipments rose 18.7 percent.
