Egg-marking pheromones in honey-bees Apis mellifera

Katza-Gozansky et al. (2001) make two points. First, they take exception to our citing their work (Katzav-Gozansky et al. 1997) in stating that the "chemical composition of Dufour's gland secretions differs between queens and normal laying workers" (Oldroyd and Patnieks 2000). Second, they point out that the Dufour's gland may not be the site of synthesis of the hypothesised egg-marking pheromone, and indeed that this pheromone may not be secreted by the Dufour's gland.
