Development of plastic cages for One-way clutches

Sprag type one-way clutches are mainly used in automobile automatic transmissions. Koyo has developed and currently manufactures, two series of sprag type one-way clutches, the KW series and KX series. To reduce cost and weight, new plastic cages have been developed for the KW series one-way clutches which are used in torque converters. This paper presents the materials, strength characteristics, and dimensional changes of the developed plastic cages and the test results of the one-way clutch assembly.
