Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in pig farms cause a variety of problems in pig production. For this reason, reducing resistances to antibiotics on site is a priority objective for modern farms. Fewer resistant bacteria in the gut also mean a reduced likelihood of the genes responsible for resistance being transmitted to other bacteria, including pathogens. The result is that individual diseased animals respond to treatment and illnesses can be contained before they affect the entire herd.
