India turns net importer of iron ore in 2014

India turned a net importer of iron ore incalendar year 2014, as import far exceededexports. Domestic steel mills imported littleover eight million tonnes (mt) of the key steelmakingraw material, as against export ofaround seven mt.Major producers such as JSW Steel, TataSteel and Essar Steel resorted to import of highquality ore, available at almost the same cost asdomestically produced lower grade material.
