Sustainable forest management: Some salient features

The forest cover in many parts of the world is diminishing. An effective and efficient management strategy, therefore, should be developed immediately and employed to save the rapidly vanishing forest resource. Sustainable forest management (SFM) requires comprehensive understanding and formulation of measures, or programs, which would be most appropriate in balancing the needs of the environment and the society. SFM is adaptive to the changing ecological conditions and socioeconomic realities. It provides strategies to optimize the development potential of the production forests and creates buffering mechanisms to perpetuate the protection role of the forests Italso provides economic benefits to the local populace. The Philippines has taken concrete steps to put SFM in place.
