Several endemic Actinidia arguta clones and two exotic A. deliciosa varieties were hybridized to develop cold tolerant hybrids that still bear large fruits. From nine artificial cross combinations made in 2 consecutive years more than 120 fruits wereharvested. Significant variations were observed in fruit weight and fruit setting ratio among the different cross combinations. Some cross combinations failed to set any viable seeds even after repeated attempts made during the period. The fruit settingappeared to be strongly dependent on female parents. The number of seeds and percentage of filled seeds in fruits derived from interspecific cross were significantly less than those of control cross (A. arguta x A. arguta). The hybrid seeds showed the germination rate of 19.2%, which is lower than that of A. arguta with 38.7%. However, once germinated, mostly of the seedlings grew normally in the nursery. These will be used for the screening of the desirable traits such as cold hardiness, productivity and pest resistance.
