The changes of the amino acid content including proline and protein content in response to NaCl treatment were investigated in between the salt-resistant variety CI5309 and salt-susceptible variety IR28 of rice. The amino acid contents such as alpha-ami-noapidic acid, y-aminobutyric acid, alanine, serine, isoleucine. leucine, pheylalanine, tyrosine, and valine increased more in the salt-resistant rice CI5309 than in the salt-susceptible rice IR28 at seven days after NaCl treatment. The 34 KDa and 55KDa protein content were increased more in the CI5309 than in the IR28 in response to NaCl treatment. A 55 KDa protein was major protein in the two rice varieties. The content of proline increased more in the leaves of CI5309 than in those of IR28 afterNaCl treatment. It means that the increased proline in the leaves may be more important factor than the proline in the roots for the salt tolerance in rice.
