During 2010, the de Fegely family from Ararat in central Victoria became one of eight properties evaluating the benefits of individual electronic animal identification in commercial sheep flocks. The de Fegelys run a dual-purpose Merino flock producing 19-micron wool from the core flock and prime lambs from cull ewes joined to Poll Dorsets. An on-farm lamb feedlot system utilising grain from their cereal cropping enterprise was established during 2006 to finish all lambs prior to slaughter.
