Sowing times critical to maximise berley yields

Extending on the results of variety trials in southern NSW, the tri-state Southern Barley Agronomy Project supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation is evaluating the competitive advantages of newly-released varieties to improve management advice for growers. Barley continues to play an important role in southern NSW farming systems, helped by the release of higher-yielding varieties. It is a valuable part of crops with wheat, particularly in no-tillage and stubble retention systems, as it is not a host for most wheat foliar diseases. Its vigorous early growth allows it to compete well with weeds, needing lower herbicide inputs and restricting weed seed set.
