Hojin is a new malting barley developed from the cross between Milyang 69 and Misatogolden, which are characterized by good quality and resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV), respectively, at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute in Korea during 2004. YMB 1734-3B-16-2-1-1, a promising line, was selected in 2001, and was designated as Milyang 117. This line showed superiority in regional yield trials (RYT) conducted from 2002 to 2004; thus, it was released as Hojin. This cultivar is resistant to BaYMV and tolerant of lodging in spite of having culms that are longer than those of Jinyang (control). Hojin matures 2 days earlier, on average, than Jinyang in rice fields in RYT. The number of spikes/m2 and 1000-seed weight of Hojin were greater than those of Jinyang. However, the number of grains per spike was the same in both cultivars. The grain and malt qualities of Hojin (i.e. germination energy, germination capacity, and water sensitivity of grains, and grain and filtration speed, Kolbach index and Diastatic power of malt) were superior to those of Jinyang. The yield potential of Hojin was 5.09 MT/ha in the field and 4.72 MT/ha in rice fields in RYT. This cultivar is suitable for double cropping system with rice in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula..
