THE BENEFITS OF a variable-ratio steering rack are pretty well known these days. By being able to vary the amount the front wheels turn relative to the steering wheel input, you can tailor a car's responses and make it safer at speed At low speeds, you can ramp up the response ratio so the vehicle responds quickly to small inputs. But at higher speeds, you can back things off to give the car a decent 'sneeze factor' as well as make it less susceptible to becoming unbalanced due to steering inputs.
