Gull-wing doors, built in Northern Ireland, brushed stainless steel body, a sales flop, one of the most famous movie cars of all time; the DMC-12's list of attributes is a long one. But perhaps just as interesting is the story of the man behind the car. And it's a tale that is truly, utterly, bizarre. We're talking a visionary who would probably have otherwise run General Motors, the way he turned his back on that future, his desperate attempt to sell a car that wasn't up to speed and, finally, allegations that he was involved in drug trafficking as a means of paying the bills. Really, you couldn't make the whole thing up. The youngest-ever person to become a GM executive and the man remembered as the father of the Pontiac GTO series, John DeLorean turned his back on his alleged $650,000 a year job to follow a dream. In 1975, he established the DeLorean Motor Company with the aim of building a better supercar.
