This is the car BMW said it would never build. Ever since the Bavarians established the M Division in 1972, it defined its position as a technological pioneer by sticking to three core principles: no four-wheel drives, no turbo engines and absolutely no automatic transmissions. The X6 M has broken all the rules in one fell swoop. It's a turbocharged four-wheel drive with a self-shifting slushbox. But BMW says a dramatic change in market demands, environmental technology have allowed it to re-write its own rule book. And, besides, it reckons the X6 is already the sportiest crossover on the road and it was only natural that it would eventually cop the M treatment. But it still begs more questions Than it answers. How can a 2.3-tonne, jacked-up/weird-arsed, four-seater four-wheel drive handle like an M ear? And considering that BMW has been reluctant to M-tune the latest Z4 and the 1-Series, why the bloody X6? Shouldn't it have concentrated on those first?
