NRCS Honors Daniel Beltran as 2011's Hispanic Farmer of the Year

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Denise Coleman, State Conservationist of the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recently selected Daniel Beltran to receive Pennsylvania's 2011 Hispanic Farmerof the Year Award for his continuing work in conservation. Mr. Beltran is a first generation farmer in Avondale, PA. He grew up in Mexico where he worked on various farms until beginning his own mushroom operation in Pennsylvania known as Masda MushroomCompany. He's gone from renting space for growing mushrooms to becoming an owner of multiple mushroom houses on several properties. "I've learned that conservation is important/' said Beltran. "Through the help of NRCS and the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), our farm learned to improve air and water quality."
