Equilibrium solubilization of toluene and octane in aqueous micellar systems of surfactants belonging to different classes (dodecyl sodium sulfate, cetylpyridinium chloride, Tween-80, Neonol AF 9-12) was studied by refractometric and UV spectrophotometric methods. Specific features of the solubilizing effect of oxyethylenated nonionic surfactants on toluene were analyzed. A modifying action of the solubilizer (toluene) on Tween-80 micelles in the aqueous medium was found; under equilibrium conditions this action led to the formation of type 1 microemulsion by the Winsor classification. By combining various methods of solubilization determination and procedures for the saturation of micellar systems by the solubilizer, the applicability of the refractometric method for determining the solubilization capacity of microemulsion systems based on oxyethylenated nonionic surfactants with respect to toluene was demonstrated.
