The European Union's emission trading scheme for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a very unique construct worldwide. The affected industry sectors there suffer additional costs which can create competitive disadvantages. The question is: will emission trading systems increasingly be created internationally, resulting in comparable competitive conditions? A recent study by German economists of IW Consult at the Cologne Institute for Economic Research examines the development of emission trading systems by region and their significance for the steel industries in important steel producing nations.
