In this issue of the journal, Smith et al} describe the concordance between rabbit and pig muscle histology and muscle/fat fractions measured at 1.5 and 3 Tesla using a 2-point Dixon approach. The validation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based biomarkers is clearly an important goal that has direct application to future studies focused on disease characterization, longitudinal evaluation, and therapeutic modulation. Although the imaging methods described offer a solid trade-off between speed and anatomical coverage [using a Dixon method with 2 echo times (TE)], there is still a range of features to consider from an acquisition, analysis, and dependent measure perspective that may inform future work.
