摘要

We have recently reported changes in cognitive functions in a patient suffering from Parkinson disease dementia syndrome (PDD) following the insertion of two DBS electrodes into the nucleus basalis Meynert (NBM) in addition to the electrodes positioned bilaterally in the subthalamic nuclei (STN). Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the NBM was performed by applying low-frequency stimulation at 20 Hz in order to evoke excitatory effects in the neuron-fiber mesh-work of the residual NBM output. STN stimulation was done with conventional 130 Hz stimulation supposedly exerting inhibitory effects. The changes in the Parkinson scores reflected this protocol's efficiency in alleviating the cardinal Parkinson symptoms.
