We describe herein preliminary results on the novel Michael addition of naphthoquinones to nitroolefins and its application to the first synthesis of the novel (6bR, 10aS)-7,8,9,110,10a,11-hexahydro-6bH-benzoacarbazole-5,6-diones and (4aR,11bS)-1,2,3,4,4a,5-hexahydro-11bH-benzobcarbazole-6,11-diones, together with a novel synthesis of 1, 2,3,4-tetrahydro-5H-benzobcarbazole-6,11-diones.
