Trends in global vehicles in use: analysis of the car parc

The world's passenger car parc comprised an estimated 524m vehicles at the end of 1997, with volumes growing by just over 2% per year, or 10m vehicles. The annual pace of growth is slowing and is expected to slow further and the dominance of themain markets is declining slowly. Japan, western Europe and the North American Free-Trade Agreement are expected to account for 71% of the global parc by 2005, down from almost 77% at the start of the 1990s. GM leads penetration of the parc with a 15.%share followed by Ford/Mazda and Toyota.
