World commercial vehicle markets: outlook to 2007

The Egyptian vehicle market has grown rapidly since liberalisation in 1993 with sales reaching almost 80,000 units in 1997. By 2002, car demand alone is set to expand to 78,000 units-up from 47,000 in 1997-although commercial vehicle demand willgrow more slowly. Tariffs remain high, fostering the assembly industry and there is some potential for exports from Egypt. The number of local producers has increased significantly recently. In Iran there has been a threefold increase in car sales to 1997 and the government is trying to encourage further foreign investment in the industry, but the country is still viewed as high risk. A ban on completely built-up (CBU) imports is enforced.
