Hilary koprowski and the viral immunity hub at the 1980s wistar institute: A T cell epitope perspective

In July 1980 I sat in the crowded audience at the Palais des Congres in Paris on the final day of the Fourth International Congress of Immunology, keenly taking notes as distinguished authorities stepped forward to present their assessments of the major advances reported at the meeting. Being a post-doc at the National Institute for Medical Research at Mill Hill, London, studying influenza immunity with Brigitte “Ita” Askonas, I was fortunate to have landed a job back in my native USA—a junior position at The Wistar Institute to start the next year when my fellowship completed.
