Knowlton (1993) has argued that the failure to recognize cryptic species in the marine environment has crippled ecological and evolutionary understanding of the oceans. This failure is due partly to the comparative lack of study of this environment; a much smaller fraction of marine taxa have received generic characterization than is true for land organisms.
