We conducted a field study to test the appli-cability of the job characteristics model (JCM) in volunteerorganizations and examine the impact of job characteristicson volunteer motivation, satisfaction and intent to quit, aswell as test a measure of volunteer performance. Onehundred and twenty-four volunteers completed measures ofjob characteristics, motivation, satisfaction, and intent toquit. Supervisors rated volunteer task performance andorganizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). Resultsshowed that job characteristics were related to volunteers'autonomous motivation, satisfaction and performance.Autonomous motivation acted as a mediator in the rela-tionship between job characteristics and satisfaction. Thetheoretical and practical implications of these findings arediscussed.
