摘要

Many chernozemic soils are characterized by deep humus-enriched "tongues", or "glosses" in their profiles. V.V. Dokuchaev mentioned "nests of chernozems" at a depth of up to 6.4 m in his book Russian Chernozem. In his later work Our Steppes in the Past and Now, he explained the origin of these tongues only by the activity of burrowing steppe animals. This explanation was supported by V.R. Vil'yams. A.A. Izmail'skii wrote about the importance of "tongues" in the water regime of chernozems: "All theseholes have undoubtedly an immense importance for supplying the deeper soil layers with water in the steppe".
