SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE - Exchange 3D Designs Without Original CAD Software

Designed to improve collaboration among extended project teams, Adobe Systems' Acrobat 3D enables users to convert virtually any CAD model into a 3D PDF file that can be viewed and manipulated without the original software. The software is intended to enable manufacturers and suppliers to rely on the PDF format for much of the project bidding and manufacturing process. We recently spoke with Bahman Dara, senior product marketing manager for Acrobat 3D, about the latest release of the software, version 8. The software has numerous perks for designers and their suppliers, Mr. Dara says. Engineers can easily communicate design intent to suppliers who don't necessarily have the CAD system that generated the model, avoiding costly mistakes later in the manufacturing process. In addition, manufacturers can protect sensitive design information by limiting access to certain features of the model.
