Eucalyptus ambigua DC. (Myrtaceae), the correct name for the Smithton Peppermint of Tasmania

The original material of Eucalyptusambigua DC. is conspecific with thetype of E. nitida Hook.f. The nameE. ambigua is older by almost thirtyyears, and is therefore the correctname for the Smithton Peppermint.Bentham and Maiden both correctlydetermined the identity of E. ambigua,but the name has been ignored for thelast 100 years. Eucalyptus ambigua isbased on a collection by Labillardierefrom southern Tasmania. Someeucalypts encountered by Labillardierein Tasmania are discussed.
