Energy prices have been at astronomical highs. People are past fussing over utility bills and are at the brink of desperation. Instead of cranking the furnace up, it's time to toss on another sweater. Cutting energy consumption whenever possible keeps stress levels low when bills start to accumulate. Aluminum producers don't have the luxury of turning down the wattage as average consumers do. A certain temperature must be achieved to smelt aluminum. There's just no getting around it. According to the Container Recycling Institute, the energy required to smelt enough aluminum for one soda can could keep a light bulb burning for two hours. In 2005, nearly 99 billion aluminum cans were produced in the United States alone.
