Over the past 20 years the steel industry has continued to develop higher strength materials, with ever-increasing demands for quality and quantity from the automotive industry. The problem the steel industry faces today is producing increased amounts of quality steel billets and bars while using inspection technology dating back more than two decades. With this thought in mind, H. Rohloff (Pty) Ltd., together with local steel producers in South Africa and Ispat Iscor, set out to develop a more effective and modern way to inspect bars, billets and tubes. Several years of research and development has led to the design and manufacture of the first Billet InspectIR unit, which is now in production at Ispat Iscor.
