AK continues to ship to GM

AK Steel says it will continue shipping steel to General Motors, despite a dispute the companies are having over their contract. AK had filed a lawsuit against GM, claiming the world's largest automaker failed to pay increased costs because of changes by GM in the scope of work. AK is seeking reimbursement for increased testing, quality control requirements and other changes. Shipping to 15 GM plants, AK is the automaker's largest steel supplier. GM also is, by far, AK's largest customer, accounting for 657 million dollars, or 18 percent of AK's steel operation sales in 2001, according to U.S. Securities and Exchange filings. No other customer accounted for more than 10 percent of the Middletown, Ohio, steel company's sales.
