U.S. Steel outduals AK in bid for National

A bankruptcy court judge approved U.S. Steel's purchase of National Steel on April 21. The jockeying to buy bankrupt National Steel had taken some twists and turns, with the union threatening to strike at National if that company complied with AK Steel's wish to void its contract. U.S. Steel's bid of 1.05 billion dollars in-eludes National's steelmaking and finishing facilities, and National Steel Pellet Co. AK's bid was 75 million dollars more than that of U.S. Steel, but AK had failed to negotiate a contract with the United Steelworkers of America.
