摘要

The molecular and crystal structure of one of themonosubstituted ferrocene derivatives which has been discussedfrom a view point of liquid crystallinity, #omega#-[4-(4-methoxyphenoxycarbonyl)-phenoxycarbonly]ethyl 4-ferrocenylbenzoate, was determined by the X-ray diffractionmethod. This compound had the –C_2H_4-chain located betweenthe phenylferrocenyl group and the mesogenic one. The –C_2H_4-chain unit as a flexible spacer was an all-transconformation. The molecule was slightly bent around the estergroup to the ferrocenylbenzoate in order to form a rod-likestructure. Two cyclopentadienyl rings in the ferrocenyl groupexhibited an eclipsed conformation rather than a staggered one. Inthis crystal, the molecules constructed a layer structure just likethe smectic one of the liquid crystals. The molecular and crystalstructure was quite similar to those of other homologuesshowing liquid crystallinity in this series. This compound,however, did not exhibit a liquid crystalline phase.
