Supportive therapy for radiotherapy patients

abstract_textpRadiotherapy plays an important role in modern multimodal treatment concepts for cancer. Its growing success is mainly due to intensified treatment schedules which require improved concepts of supportive care to cope with normal tissue reactions. All normal tissue reactions can be described and classified according to international systems and should be diagnosed by a qualified radio-oncologist, but diagnosis and treatment should be known by all physicians treating cancer patients. Supportive care in radio-oncology should be performed according to published guidelines (http://www.DEGRO.org) and is part of the treatment plan. Late effects in normal tissue can occur years after treatment, and long-term follow-up by the radio-oncologist is required./p/abstract_text
