Control engineering research in United Kingdom universities

In 2001 the quality of research in British Universities was assessed in a Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) on behalf of all the Higher Education Funding Councils in the United Kingdom. Similar assessments had been carried out in 1992 and 1996. The object of the exercise was to rate the research carried out in 69 different disciplines, known as Units of Assessment (UoAs), each of which was assessed by a Panel appointed for the purpose. Although Control Engineering research was included only in the descriptor of UoA 29, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, it was also assessed in several other Engineering UoAs, principally within UoA 26, General Engineering, UoA 27, Chemical Engineering, and UoA 30, Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering. From among the Engineering Panels, only the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Panel has published a detailed description of how it dealt with the various phases of the RAE1, some of which is quoted here.
