The casting of semi-solid metal (SSM) can result in components with details and thin-wall sections similar to die castings but with the integrity, strength and ductility only attainable via squeeze casting or the highest quality gravity and low pressure permanent mold casting. However, the high cost of MHD aluminum billet has served to severely deter the widespread use of SSM cast components. Significant cost reductions via slurry approaches and/or other alternatives to MHD billet are major current thrusts of research to overcome this obstacle.
