Whereas many automation manufacturers can cite cornerstones of innovation along their development paths, there are few for whom the driving force of science and innovation underpins their business virtually on a continuous basis. One such company is Tracerco Limited, a subsidiary of Johnson Matthey Plc. Here, there are almost no 'off-the-shelf' products since most developments are designed as bespoke, problem-solving solutions meeting the challenge for new ideas and scientific ingenuity. Originated in 1958 as a small research team within ICI, the company has since grown to become a global technology business and a world leader in its field. It employs around 300 people throughout the world, of whom 132 are based in the UK. It operates from 31 strategically located overseas offices, has a worldwide network of agents and service partners and exports some 70 per cent of its total output.
