Attitudes to CCS (carbon capture and storage) vary markedly between industries. While it may seem an unfamiliar 'mystery' in the power industry and government, CO_2 capture and transport and underground injection and storage of gases are regarded as completely commonplace by process engineers in the gas and chemical industries, where they have been in use for many decades for process purposes unconnected with global warming control. The separated CO_2 has been utilised or vented to atmosphere because governments have not generally so far (excepting Norway) adequately incentivised its permanent sequestration. For oxygen-free high pressure conditions equivalent to pre-capture in IGCC power generation, at least 15 well-proven commercial processes are routinely available with normal process guarantees.
