Crude-oil combined cycle conversion, why the vertical-flow HRSG is best

Conversion of crude-oil-fired open cycle gas turbine units to combined cycle is helping Saudi Arabia towards achieving its goal of reducing energy consumption per unit of GDP. But high sulphur crude poses problems for the HRSG designer. Saudi Arabia consumes around a quarter of its own total oil production and according to some long term projections, on a 'business as usual' scenario, could become a net oil importer in about 25 years.
