Flatscreen TVs overtake CRT shipments

2008 will be the year when combined global shipments of liquid crystal display(LCD)and plasma screen TVs finally overtake those of TVs with cathode ray tubes(CRT).According to industry watcher iSuppli Corp.(El Segundo,CA),total global shipments of flatscreen display formats will hit almost 110 million this year,fueled by lower prices,the advent of high-definition broadcasting,and sporting events such as the Beijing Olympics,compared with just over 101 million CRT TV sets.LCD TV shipments are forecast to grow at 21% annually through 2011,and plasma TV sets at 16% per annum,versus negative 16% growth for CRT TVs.Meanwhile,the rapid shift to LCD TVs presents challenges to the industry in terms of the disposal of millions of sets of conventional cathode ray tube TVs.
