The gearbox can be constructed in one of two ways, either by using commercial gears (lathe change wheels, etc.) or by using gears removed from a commercial gearbox, e.g. Honda C50 or C70 moped. The Honda C90 has a different gearbox and is unsuitable. The Honda C50/70 gearbox shafts (photo 25) are at approximately 1.75in. centres and the Fowler gearbox scales at 2.03125 inch. Other gearboxes may be suitable. The disadvantage of the Honda C50/70 is that it is not possible to take a power-take-off or lubricator drive from the layshaft. The Fowler is a three-shaft gearbox, having the input and output shafts in line with each other. To obtain three ratios, the centre gear is keyed or splined to the output shaft and is equipped with dogs on each side and a groove for the selector fork.
