The theory of atom lasers

We review the current theory of atom lasers. A tutorial treatment of second quantisation and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is presented, and basic concepts of coherence are outlined. The generic types of atom laser models are surveyed and illustrated by specific examples. We conclude with detailed treatments of the mechanisms of gain and output coupling. [References: 66]
